Background of the Study:
In Warri South Local Government, Delta State, traditional medicine continues to be a primary resource for treating skin infections. Indigenous remedies, prepared from locally available herbs and natural ingredients, are widely used due to their accessibility, affordability, and cultural acceptance (Ighodaro, 2023). Traditional healers often combine empirical knowledge with ritualistic practices to address various skin ailments, ranging from minor infections to chronic dermatological conditions. Although many community members report positive outcomes, the lack of standardized preparation methods and clinical evidence raises concerns about consistency, safety, and efficacy (Agbaje, 2024). Recent investigations suggest that integrating traditional medicine with modern dermatological care could optimize treatment outcomes, while preserving valuable indigenous knowledge (Obaseki, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite its widespread use, traditional medicine for skin infections in Warri South is not supported by standardized clinical evidence. This reliance on non-standardized treatments may lead to inconsistent outcomes and potential risks for patients. The need to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of these practices is critical to ensure that they complement rather than compromise modern dermatological care (Ighodaro, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the efficacy of traditional medicine in treating skin infections.
  2. To assess the safety and consistency of traditional remedies.
  3. To recommend integrative approaches combining traditional and modern treatments.

Research Questions:

  1. What traditional remedies are used for skin infections in Warri South?
  2. How effective are these treatments compared to conventional methods?
  3. What strategies can facilitate the integration of traditional and modern skin infection treatments?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional medicine significantly improves skin infection outcomes.
  2. Variability in traditional remedy preparation affects treatment consistency.
  3. Integrated treatment approaches yield better patient outcomes.

Significance of the Study:
The study will provide critical insights into the role of traditional medicine in managing skin infections, potentially guiding integrative treatment approaches that combine the strengths of traditional and modern practices for improved patient care in Warri South (Ighodaro, 2023; Agbaje, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Traditional Medicine: Indigenous health practices using natural remedies.
  • Skin Infections: Conditions caused by pathogenic microorganisms affecting the skin.
  • Integrative Approach: The combination of traditional and modern medical practices.
